Kelowna is home to about 110,000 people and the Central Okanagan Regional District (greater Kelowna) has a population of approximately 180,000. Kelowna is well known for its hot, dry summers and temperate winters. The average daytime high during July and August is 27.4° C (81.3° F) at Kelowna Airport, and considerably warmer in the centre of Kelowna and many surrounding areas, averaging around 31°C (87.8° F). Summer nights are cool and refreshing with average morning low temperatures averaging 10° C (50° F) even in the warmest months. The average daytime high during December and January is -0.3° C (31.5° F) with an average low of -7.7° C (18.1° F), at Kelowna Airport. Again, the temperatures in the centre of Kelowna are somewhat milder in the winter. Kelowna receives over 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and just over 11 inches of rain. Total annual precipitation is 366.4 mm. (14.4 in.) This consists of 280.7 mm. (11 in.) of rain and 105.5 cm. (41.5 inches) of snow. This results in a semiarid climate with ponderosa pine, sagebrush and even cactus growing in some un-irrigated areas. The climate is like many parts of the American West and Southwest, but with the influence of Lake Okanagan, which stretches approximately 130 Km (81miles) through the Okanagan Valley.
